Frequently Asked
Questions
Straight answers to what founders, CTOs, and heads of product ask us most when they are evaluating a UI/UX design partner. If your question is not here, reach out and we will give you a direct answer.
01What makes The Skins Factory different?
Twenty-five years of world-class UI/UX design, a founder-led process, and a perfect 5.0 rating on Clutch across verified client reviews. We specialize in complex, data-dense products where design mistakes are expensive: fintech platforms, healthcare systems, cybersecurity dashboards, and enterprise SaaS.
02Who will I actually be working with?
You work directly with a Senior Designer and the founder, Jeff, on every project, from first call to final delivery. No design project is handed off to a junior designer. The people who scope your project are the people who design it. Of course, we can always scale if necessary.
03Why hire a specialized design studio instead of a freelancer or large agency?
A boutique studio gives you senior-level expertise without agency overhead or freelancer risk. Large agencies staff your project with juniors after the pitch. Freelancers can disappear mid-project. Here, one accountable studio with 25+ years of digital product design experience handles your project end to end.
04What industries does The Skins Factory specialize in?
The better question is what industries we don't specialize in. Not many. We focus on five verticals where product complexity is highest: fintech, healthcare, cybersecurity, enterprise SaaS, and AI-powered products. If your product does not fit one of those five, we can still design it, because that focus sits on top of 25 years of designing just about everything. Over 125 Windows Media Player skins. Media players for Akamai, iRiver, Nero Showtime, and Motorola's iRadio. Communications applications for AT&T and Nortel. Disney's online music store, Target's Windows desktop storefront, and projects for the NFL, Alienware, HP, and Yahoo!, among hundreds of other applications.
05What kind of companies does The Skins Factory work with?
Funded startups, mid-size companies and global brands. For every project we've done for Microsoft, Disney, Bank of America, NVIDIA, and Intel, we've designed many more for extraordinary startups who are looking to bring their ideas to life and mid-size companies who need an advantage to take on their competition.
06Can you redesign an existing or legacy product?
Yes. Modernizing legacy enterprise software is one of our core specialties. We redesign dated interfaces into modern, intuitive products while preserving the workflows your users already rely on, so adoption does not suffer.
07Do you design enterprise dashboards?
Yes, dashboard design and redesign is one of our most requested specialties. We turn dense, data-heavy screens into dashboards that surface what matters, so users make faster decisions instead of hunting through tables. Whether you are building a new analytics product or modernizing an existing dashboard, we have a dedicated enterprise dashboard design and redesign practice built for exactly this work.
08Do you only do design, or development too?
The Skins Factory is a dedicated UI/UX design studio. You receive production-ready design files, a documented design system (if it's part of the scoped work), and developer-ready specs your engineering team can implement without guesswork. If you need the build handled too, our trusted development partner takes your product from approved UI to production-ready software.
09How long does a UI/UX design project take?
It really depends on the scope. A focused engagement, a single app flow, a dashboard, a website refresh, typically runs 3-4 weeks, while a full product design or multi-module platform takes longer. Whatever you are building, we scope the project around your launch timeline, and because you work directly with the people designing your product, there is no agency queue slowing things down.
10How is pricing structured?
We work three ways, and the project determines which. When the scope is clear, we prefer a fixed price, so you know the full investment before work begins. When you are starting from scratch and the deliverables are still taking shape, we work in dedicated time blocks through our fractional design model. And some projects use a hybrid: a time block to define the product, then a fixed price for the remainder. Whichever fits, you always know the structure and cost before we start. Nothing is padded, and there are no surprises.
11How do we communicate during a project?
Directly, and often, and always with Jeff, the founder. No account managers, no ticket queues, no "let me check with the team and get back to you." Clients are often surprised how fast they hear back, even outside business hours. Fast feedback loops, straight answers, and a direct line to the person accountable for your project.
12Should we start with a UX audit?
If you are seeing churn, low activation, stalled adoption, or more support tickets than normal, a UX audit is the right start. It identifies what is actually broken, in navigation, onboarding, and core workflows, before you invest in a redesign, so design effort goes where it moves the needle. It is also the lowest-risk way to start working with us: a fixed-cost $1,500 engagement that delivers findings you can act on whether or not we do the redesign together.
The Skins Factory has designed healthcare software interfaces for enterprise platforms including InnovaMD (an Anthem company) and DocPanel, the world's largest radiology marketplace. Every engagement follows the same principle: exceptional healthcare UI/UX design does not require access to a single real patient record.
